1440 × 1080 is 16:9. The pixels are not square.

Three numbers describe the shape of a picture, and only two of them are ever looked at: the pixels it is stored in, how wide those pixels are, and the shape they make together. 1440 / 1080 counts as 4:3. Multiply by a pixel aspect of 4/3 and it is 16:9. A tool that reads the width and the height and stops does not get a slightly wrong answer — it gets the other answer.

The engine is free and needs no account. It does not look like an error either. It looks like a slightly wrong crop, or faces that are a bit narrow, and it survives every review that is not a measurement. And a file can state all three numbers: when the declared shape and the computed one disagree, one of them is a lie and nothing in the file says which, so the same asset is a different shape in different applications. Two more things the arithmetic gives for free — bars and cropping are the same fraction on opposite axes (4:3 inside 16:9 is 25% of the width in bars, or 25% of the height gone, so the only real question is where the subject is), and burning the correction in cannot hit the shape exactly, because the scaled width is a whole number of pixels and 4:2:0 wants an even one. Apply the correction twice by accident and the distortion is the pixel aspect squared. Every lane ships a worked example that costs nothing. Writing the report needs credits.
